Ohv: A Vision of Family Life in a Showflat by Ck Low

Blending Functionality and Aspiration in a Family-Centric Space

Designed by Ck Low, Ohv is a 3-bedroom condominium showflat that reimagines family life in a residential space. With a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian influences, this design offers a calming, aspirational environment for potential buyers.

Ohv was conceived with the idea of family life at its core. The design decisions were made to ensure the space was both functional and aspirational, allowing potential buyers to envision their lives in the space. The design draws from Japanese and Scandinavian influences, known for their calming effects, creating a peaceful haven amidst a bustling neighbourhood.

What sets Ohv apart is its focus on promoting a strong, healthy family life and mental well-being. Designed to cater to a young family, the showflat features family-friendly aspects that foster closer ties while providing individual space for work, play, and growth. This focus has become increasingly relevant in the wake of the pandemic, where home has become the central hub of life.

The realization of Ohv's design was grounded in practicality. All built-in carpentry was designed to be cost-efficient, with materials chosen for their availability in the local market and durability to withstand the wear and tear of a family with children. High-pressure laminates were used instead of veneer, and existing finishes and fittings were retained wherever possible to minimize wastage and promote sustainability.

Spanning 102 square meters, Ohv's layout was reconfigured to include open spaces to reduce the feeling of "cabin fever" from extended periods at home. Family-friendly features include a raised platform that both segments the space and brings children and parents closer, and see-through walls that allow parents to watch over their children. Quiet spaces were also incorporated for adults to take a break and for children to develop independently.

Ohv's design was informed by a survey conducted by Sekisui House Human Life R&D Institute on the effects of staying at home during the pandemic. The design addresses five key points suggested in the study to improve happiness at home, including coexistence and balance to reduce the burden of housework on women, creating an office space at home, using greenery to reduce stress, creating personal space, and providing multiple learning areas for children.

This innovative design was recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a testament to its creative and professional excellence. Ohv is a shining example of how thoughtful design can enhance family life and mental well-being, especially in challenging times.
